To be totally honest when I think of Florida cutting-edge hip-hop doesn’t necessarily come to mind. In fact my knowledge of the scene there unfortunately stops short at a Rick Ross or Flo Rida, a shameful admission I know. But beyond the Hollywoodesque happenings of South Beach, and to my surprise, is a burgeoning scene in Jacksonville
lead by a mysterious yet charismatic MC by the name of Tough Junkie. As levelheaded as they come Tough Junkie (or TJ as he’s sometimes referred to) is the type of artist that channels his creativity through a wealthy array of blue-collar insights, and if anything his classic flow is a reminder of why I fell in love with Hip-Hop in the first place. He’s released a whopping forty-three albums before releasing his critically acclaimed album Grab What You Can under the Colemine imprint, and he seems primed to make this his break-out year. RH caught up with TJ for a First Look spotlight, and we were able to gain some insight on his early development as an artist and how the underground isn’t a safety zone anymore.
